What's the buzz around the CEATEC (short for Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies) Japan 2012? A standard mosquito isn't flying around, but there is the new Toyota Smart INSECT. Originally labeled the Toyota COMS electric vehicle, the INSECT has gotten a new title. (But it doesn't have a connection to Daimler's Smart brand).

The Toyota Smart INSECT, which is short for "Information Network Social Electric City Transporter," is a single-passenger EV that connects its driver with the world around him/her. It features unique, bug-like gullwing doors and uses voice recognition, motion sensors, and behavior prediction to truly connect the driver to his/her vehicle, as well as to his home or apartment through the online Toyota Smart Center platform.

The company explains that "[a] 'virtual agent' at the Toyota Smart Center recognizes the driver's voice and predicts his or her intentions, setting the destination and operating various functions of the vehicle, such as the fog lamps and audio system."1

In addition, the gullwing doors can be opened with a single hand motion from the driver, and the vehicle also has the ability to identify faces and recognize its registered driver when he/she approaches. It includes several unique smart phone features cloud-based services as well.
