Japanese automaker Toyota has built quite a "green" reputation for itself, as this company builds many eco-friendly vehicles such as the Toyota Prius. Now, the company is extending its dedication to sustainability through its building practices. For example, one of the most recent Toyota buildings, the Kansas City Regional Technical Training Center in Missouri has achieved a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. This site trains Toyota dealer technicians. Overall, a total of 11 Toyota/Lexus facilities and 18 Toyota/Lexus dealerships in the U.S. have received LEED certifications.

Doug Beebe, TMS Corporate Manager of Administrative Services for Toyota, explains, "At Toyota, we are committed to reducing environmental impacts throughout our operations. LEED provides a framework for us to demonstrate that doing what is environmentally responsible can also be financially responsible."1 Over 99 percent of construction waste from the technical training center project avoided landfills by being recycled or salvaged.

Toyota and Lexus dealerships are very committed to becoming green as well. As TMS Vice President of Retail Market Development, Ernest Bastien, explains, "Toyota and Lexus dealers have truly seized the opportunity to 'green' their businesses, and by doing so are demonstrating environmental leadership in their communities. Dealers are also quickly re-couping their initial investments and realizing the long term financial benefits of building more efficient dealerships."2
