For those of you who have spent some time on the other side of the tracks, you know how dangerous it can be to park your car in certain neighborhoods or on certain streets. There is always the chance that you will just come back to a chassis sitting on cinderblocks or it could just be gone entirely. For certain Toyota dealers it seems like they may not have much to worry about. Specifically we are talking about the Toyota Prius and how it was declared to be one of the least likely cars to be stolen by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).

After conducting a national study to determine which cars had the highest and lowest chances of being stolen, our favorite hybrid came in last. The next natural question to ask is, "why?"

Our team here at Heart City Toyota Scion was stumped, but Frank Scafidi, a spokesperson for the NICB explained, "It could be that auto thieves are going to steal something for which there generally a market need for the parts."1

What he means to say is that most stolen cars are taken to a chop shop where they are broken down into individual parts to be sold separately. This makes cars with parts that can be placed in multiple models much more valuable than specialized parts that are unique to a certain car.  Also, hybrid car parts are very complicated and most likely, there are very few underground mechanics that specialize in gas-electric cars.
